This is Gao’s masterwork and the only real starting point. Soul Mountain was written over eight years while Gao was still in China, and it carries the accumulated weight of a culture, a landscape, and a self in the process of dissolution and reformation. The dual-pronoun structure, alternating chapters narrated as “I” and “you”, is not a gimmick but a philosophical statement about the instability of identity.
